Opening Up (4)
And hadn't we two become one image as inspired
/two on this covered bridge /two
on this covered walk the townsmen
raised above the water
/refining the maps, repairs /the slopes
of walks rewritten into weather
/the mortared and cockeyed fire-stone
/hadn't two trusted love so far
/loosening the grips of gossips and the land-grab
engineers? Because the canoe's
outdoors /because the bagged stone's
poured /because the light
along the walls— over the walls and walk
the stones make lively after all
/over the lily, lavender— invites
this happy pulse
and pause in conversation— two with their loaves
and zinfandel /two
in their subject selves— their fingers washed
and run to dry almost on denim
/because it's Sunday and time's come— two
will have seemed themselves
the fine idea in the finish /and might
with themselves make glad
/make new where the storms blew /where
the river's idling /make now
and now /where even the winds
can tell for sure
/and even the bedding land /made
new in being ready.
