Variations on a Theme of May Swenson

When my long lease is
canceled and I sulk back to
my Father's dark house

what shall I be with
no more rough and smooth of stones,
leaf green, water's kiss

Where shall I pasture
mind's ghost without words, all those
singing fields of runes

Whom shall I follow
on the soft paws of my heart
with human love gone.
