one of those yellow ones...not a watermelon by Richard Zola

the man selling melons stares at her bare feet
their imprints in snow

both feet are clean

she gives him blue money
he returns silver and a yellow fruit

covers his face
with the papier mache head of a horse

next day he stares at her new boots
their imprints in snow

both boots are clean

she asks to buy the space
where the melon had been

he lifts a cloth

reveals the papier mache
head of a horse between melons

she gives him blue money he returns silver
and a papier mache head of a horse

in the kitchen
she cuts the head into slices

arranges the slices around a bowl
invites guests

doesn’t open the door when they knock

next day the man selling melons
stares at the papier mache heads of horses

tied to her feet their imprints in snow
both heads are clean

she asks to buy the space
where the head had been

he lifts a cloth reveals a melon
in a row of melons

she gives him blue money

he hollows a melon places it over his head

she doesn’t hear what he says
his voice being muffled
