RULES by John West

Sound like an East German phone
turn and ask the shop guy
if it was me, he waves me on
smiling, I've paid

those two women
a mother and daughter perhaps
with their sack of cakes
I met them on the way up
ten, fifteen minutes choosing
both of them massive
bellies and boobs
drooping, wobbling

now a parking ticket
just a few inches over

this morning on the phone
to a real estate agent
my eighteen year old son wants to rent
I'll have to sign the lease
if he leaves it early
he or I'll pay the rent
till they find someone else
I left a flat dirty 25 years ago
will that be remembered?

he has bald tyres
no car insurance
he'll have ten dollars left
each week

I U-turn off fast
in a 'No Turn' Zone.
