JANUARY by Jesse Lee Kercheval

An ice dam is water
that wants to be warm
so badly it forces up
your shingles, tears its way
inside your roof, just so
it can be wet again, thaw
and drip down through
your insulation, into
your ceiling, seeping
into the plaster, sending
it crashing down on
your daughter's piano.
Don't be angry. Don't
think of the ice as
a new roof, a serious
expense not covered
by homeowner's insurance.
Think of the ice
as someone who wants
to join the family,
as the first visitor
in promising New Year.

IN WISCONSIN by Jesse Lee Kercheval

winter days are curt:
two blinks & its dark.
Sneeze--the day is gone.
Yet the elongated nights
are Galapagos Islands of time,
the stars pinholes
to a brighter universe,
the moon the perfect
flashlight for reading
all night in bed.
