Joyce Nower's poems, essays and reviews have appeared, among others, in The Library Journal, Choice, The Catbird Seat, New Works Review, Slant, Taproot, The Journals, Terminus, Curbside Review and Grasslimb. One of the founders (at San Diego State University) of the first Women's Studies Program in the nation, she has also organized many poetry readings, art shows, community programs, and political events and was awarded three successive Artist-in-the-Community grants by the California Arts Council. She holds a Third Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. She participated in the production of one of the first all-women's poetry anthologies, Rainbow Snake, 1971, now a collectible. During June of 1999, Nower presented lectures on contemporary American poetry at Sichuan Normal University, Shaanxi Normal University, and Yanan University in the People's Republic of China. Her first book of poems, Year of the Fires, was published in 1983. More recently, in 2001, Column of Silence was published by Avranches Press and, in July, 2003, Avranches Press published her Qin Warriors and Other Poems.
